Market Overview

Today is turning into a massive tech reckoning on Wall Street, with the Nasdaq sliding over 3.2% as the market sharply re-evaluates the sheer scale of Big Tech’s AI spending.

Following GOOGLs historic wipeout yesterday, a fresh round of earnings misses has triggered an aggressive tech selloff, prompting institutional investors to rotate heavily out of high-growth tech and into traditional defensive safe havens like healthcare, utilities, and consumer staples.

  • INTC has cratered roughly 29.5%, trading near $64.83 in one of its worst single-day drops on record. The chipmaker issued disastrous Q4 revenue guidance ($15B–$16B vs. the $17.1B expected), blaming a severe, unexpected freeze in the core PC market. Its Client Computing revenue dropped 5%, dragging the broader semiconductor sector down with it.

  • AMZN is down just under 2%, trading around $239. While the stock has recovered significantly from its sharp 7% pre-market plunge, anxiety remains high over its cash burn. Amazon reported a staggering $42.4 billion in negative free cash flow on a trailing 12-month basis, driven by its relentless $220 billion capital expenditure projection to fund AI infrastructure.

Macro & Sector Dynamics:

  • The Rotation Is Real: While the tech-heavy Nasdaq and S&P 500 information technology sectors are taking a severe beating, traditional defensive names are catching the capital inflows. Sectors like utilities and consumer staples have seen a strong push this month as investors look to park capital outside of AI volatility.

  • Energy & Macro Pressures: Beyond tech, commodities are highly volatile. WTI crude has pushed past $104 a barrel and Brent is up at $113 on escalating tensions in the Middle East, giving a localized boost to oil majors like ExxonMobil and Chevron. Meanwhile, Bitcoin has slipped back under $77,000 following a major security hack at Binance.

The SPY is punching lower today, down hard to 757.4 and now sitting well below the 21 EMA at 767.83 after just one prior close underneath it. This is the kind of gap-and-go lower that turns a one-day wobble into something more serious, and we need to see a recovery soon or that single close below the 21 becomes a trend. The 8 EMA at 766.17 and the 50 day at 766.81 are converging right around the 21, so the whole MA cluster is now overhead resistance. VIX at 20.1 is not screaming panic, but the price action is. Watch today’s close carefully - a flush to these levels that closes near the lows would be a real yellow flag.

The dominant theme in this morning’s flow is large institutional risk reversal activity in SPX, with the biggest prints skewing bullish - two block trades totaling over $696M notional are positioned for upside through December. That said, there is a notable bearish risk reversal in near-term SPXW expiring November 6th for roughly $200M, suggesting some players are hedging or fading the bounce over the next week. On the semis side, a $20M put sale in SOXL signals conviction that the recent weakness is a buying opportunity at current levels.
